Dolpo
The remotest trekking in Nepal: Phoksundo Lake, high passes and days without a lodge.
Dolpo is the far west, behind the Dhaulagiri massif, and it is the least visited region we guide in. Much of it is camping rather than teahouse trekking, with a full crew carrying kitchen and tents.
Shey Phoksundo — a lake of an improbable blue — is the image everyone knows. Beyond it are high passes, Bon and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and a way of life that has changed very little.
Time, self-sufficiency and previous trekking experience. Days are long, altitude is sustained, and there is no quick exit. It is the most rewarding walking in the country for people who have already done the well-known routes.
Late spring to early autumn. Like Mustang, Dolpo is in the rain shadow and stays walkable through the monsoon.
